“From the Chair’s Perspective: Insights on Academic Leadership” provides an insider’s look at the realities of serving as a university department chair. Over four sessions, veteran chairs will share their experiences and perspectives on this uniquely vital leadership role.

The first session explores the various relationships chairs must cultivate with faculty colleagues, administrators across the institution, staff, and students. Topics covered will include building rapport, communicating effectively, setting an inclusive culture, and handling conflicts. The second installment dives into the inevitable transitions of assuming and ultimately exiting the chair position. In the third workshop, chairs will draw from personal experiences to illustrate the array of challenging situations or “fires” that can emerge within a department, such as addressing personnel issues, student grievances, policy disputes or other conflicts. The series concludes with an open Q&A where attendees can ask questions based on their unique contexts and concerns.
