Migdalisel Colón-Berlingeri

Assistant Professor, College of Human Medicine

My name is Lisy Colón, I am an Assistant Professor at the College of Human Medicine. I am a Cellular Molecular Biologist by training but I have been teaching for several years a range of courses from cellular to human biology for both undergraduate students and medical students.  My career as an educator started at the UPR-Rio Piedras where I worked with SoTL projects to integrate mathematics in biology courses and to promote undergraduate research. At CHM I’ve been involved in developing content for the Shared Discovery Curriculum. I am excited about this new opportunity as a Lilly fellow and to develop a project in assessing and promoting metacognition among medical students.

Project:

Metacognition is one’s knowledge concerning one’s own cognitive process and it is an important component of student academic success.  It is one of the cognitive strategies developed by the lifelong learner.  Commitment to lifelong learning is in turn a significant component of the medical profession. The goal of this project is to assess student metacognition and critical thinking skills in first year medical students. MWe will investigate student metacognitive knowledge and regulation using the Metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) as well as critical thinking skills measured with the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA). We will evaluate the impact of first year experiences in students’ metacognitive and critical thinking skills and subsequently the development of lifelong learning and clinical reasoning abilities.
