Exploring Academic Leadership: Navigating Non-traditional Academic Leadership Career Paths
Each year, the Leadership Institute series offers academic administrators the opportunity to interact with their peers around key topics. This series of 90-minute sessions are designed to expand upon themes introduced at New Administrator Orientation. These sessions are required for department chairpersons, school directors, and associate deans of non-departmentally organized colleges within the first two years of their appointments; all other administrators are encouraged to attend sessions they would find useful.

As appointment types and positions evolve across higher education, pathways to leadership roles rarely follow a prescribed pattern. Often, opportunities for career advancement may emerge that do not have a clear path beyond the formal, or informal, role; however, the experience one gains has the potential to open up other prospective career directions. This session will provide insights into navigating non-traditional academic leadership roles and offer perspectives on how to maximize career opportunities.
